Lancer Sports Complex

A major athletic facility expansion integrating efficient HVAC, pool filtration, electrical upgrades, and advanced lighting controls to support diverse recreation and training activities.

Project Description

J.M.R. Electric Ltd. completed the Mechanical and Electrical scopes for the University of Windsor’s new Lancer Sports and Recreation Centre — a two-storey, 120,000 square feet  addition to the existing St. Denis Athletic Facility. This $73 million upgrade modernized and expanded the university’s athletic amenities, creating a state-of-the-art facility for students, athletes, and the community.

The new complex features a triple gymnasium, fitness centre, pool, outdoor sports fields, and a modern social lounge. The mechanical design was divided into four main areas, accommodating a variety of conditions and activities while adjusting to occupancy levels. Fitness areas are served by a demand-controlled ventilation system based on CO₂ levels, ensuring comfort and energy efficiency. The pool system includes regenerative media filtration with high filter exchange rates, along with CO₂, pH, chlorine, and UV filtration to capture micro-contaminants and maintain superior water quality.

On the electrical side, the design included upgrades to the existing medium voltage systems to support the new facility. Lighting controls in the gymnasium were designed for individual fixture control and integrated with the audio-visual system for enhanced functionality. Security systems include timed and PIN-based access controls, meeting the University’s safety requirements while accommodating visiting teams.

This project highlights JMR’s ability to deliver high-performance mechanical and electrical systems for large-scale institutional and recreational facilities, combining energy efficiency, safety, and innovative design.
